Commercial Construction Projects Expected to Increase

Thanks to the research of Landscape Online, they are telling us that the American Institute of Architects Need a Roof?(AIA) is forecasting an improvement in nonresidential construction projects for the rest of 2012, reinforced by a demand for industrial facilities, hotel, and retail projects.  They all have to have roofs, so this is a good thing for us roofing contractors.

R-Value for Roof Insulation Increasing Again!

Did you know that polyisocynaurate insulation is one of the most commonly used insulation types in the roofing industry?  When the building code agencies adopt the 2012 ASHRAE the prescribed R-values for above deck roof insulation will be increasing again.   There is some questions on how long-term thermal resistance (LTTR) should be used for R- Value determination.  NRCA recommends using an in-service of 5.0 per inch thickness in heating conditions and 5.6 per inch thickness in cooling conditions in determining thermal calculations. Be aware that there are different factors to consider when working with metal fasteners.  To read the complete article by Darrell Smith, PE, RRC is Civil Engineer – Building Envelope/Roof Consultant, visit the Buildings website at .  You will also find information providing the R-Value recommendations based on the Zones you are working in.  Northern Michigan is in Zone 6 & 7, with Southern Michigan in Zone 5.

Northern Michigan Commercial Building Owners Beware!!!

Use caution when hiring contractors!  Make sure you request a copy of their insurances:  They should be able to quickly provide you with a certificate of Liability, Automobile, and Workers Compensation insurance policies.  Hiring an uninsured contractor can save you money initially, but should an incident occur, you will be left paying the bills!

OSHA Has Online Safety Courses

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has selected 10 training providers to deliver 25 online courses as part of the agency’s Outreach Training Program.  We can’t have enough places to learn about safety especially in the contruction and roofing business.  OSHA’s training program teaches workers how to identify, prevent and eliminate workplace hazards.  The program advises workers of their rights, the responsibilities of the employer and how to file a complaint.

The online courses are voluntary and provide training to help protect workers’ safety and health and also help employers reduce the high costs of worker injuries and illnesses.  The organizations OSHA selected to offer the online courses will provide construction, general industry and maritime 10 and 30 hour classes.

To access more information about the courses, go to http://www.osha.gov/dte/outreach/index.html.
