A Cause for Celebration

YIKES!  We had a NEAR MISS – let’s CELEBRATE!!!!

We do not actually break out into a “happy dance” or have a pizza party when we have a “near miss”, but we do actually celebrate the fact that the system we put in place years ago of encouraging our field employees to speak freely to management about near misses is successful.  Springfield requires that all near misses are documented and discussed with the management team.  This is done in a non-judgmental, non-condescending manner.  While Springfield management has learned quite a bit from extensive OSHA and MI-OSHA training and certifications, we sometimes feel that we learn the most from our own employees and their day in, day out experiences of “hands on” construction work.  We honor the men and women who work at construction jobs and we hope the attached “near miss” form will help some of you to develop a culture at your workplace where worker safety is embraced and where near misses are treated as opportunities for improvement.

Workplace Safety

“HONK FOR WORKPLACE SAFETY” signs lined the side of U.S. 31 in Charlevoix after a large crane tipped over at a cement plant.  No one was hurt.  Construction workers from all over Michigan picketed to raise awareness for construction safety. They have reason to be concerned.  Without proper precautions, construction can be a dangerous endeavor.  Springfield holds its own employees and construction workers everywhere in high regard.  We have professional engineers on staff to design, implement, and install fall prevention systems inside and outside of industrial facilities. Springfield Inc. helps clients with rooftop safety programs that keep people safe as well as keeping our commercial clients in compliance with OSHA.  We do it all and can help you without costing you an “ARM and a LEG.”

Going “Green” Continues to Show Benefits!

Going “green” continues to show benefits throughout the life cycle of a building.

Today, green buildings can be delivered at a price comparable to conventional buildings and investments can be recouped through operational cost savings and, with the right design features, create a more productive workplace.

“This report synthesizes credible evidence from around the world on green buildings into one collective resource, and the evidence presented highlights that sustainable buildings provide tangible benefits and make clear business sense,” said Jane Henley, CEO of WorldGBC.

“From risk mitigation across a building portfolio and city-wide economic benefits, to the improved health and well-being of individual building occupants, the business case for green building will continue to evolve as markets mature. Indeed we have already seen this momentum grow globally where in more and more places, green is now becoming the status quo.”

In a release, the council said key findings include:

—Asset value: As investors and occupiers become more knowledgeable about and concerned with the environmental and social impacts of the built environment, buildings with better sustainability credentials will have increased marketability. In fact, studies from around the world demonstrate a pattern of greener buildings being able to more easily attract tenants and to command higher rents and sale prices;

—Design and construction costs: Research shows that building green does not necessarily need to cost more, particularly when cost strategies, program management and environmental strategies are integrated into the development process right from the start;

—Operating costs: Green buildings have been shown to save money through reduced energy and water use and lower long-term operations and maintenance costs. The energy savings alone typically exceed any cost premiums associated with their design and construction within a reasonable payback period;

—Workplace productivity and health: Research shows that the green design attributes of buildings and indoor environments can improve worker productivity and occupant health and well-being, resulting in bottom line benefits for businesses;

—Risk mitigation: Sustainability risk factors can significantly affect the rental income and the future value of real estate assets, in turn affecting their return on investment. Regulatory risks have become increasingly apparent in countries and cities around the world, including mandatory disclosure, building codes and laws banning inefficient buildings.

The report concludes that illustrating that by greening our built environment at the neighborhood and city scales, the green building industry can deliver on large-scale economic priorities such as climate change mitigation, energy security, resource conservation and job creation, long-term resilience and quality of life.

“This report underscores that green buildings play a fundamental and cost-efficient role in tackling some of the immediate challenges of our times,” said Rick Fedrizzi, chair of the WorldGBC and president, CEO and founding chair of the U.S. Green Building Council.

“The WorldGBC is proud to continue to play a leadership role in the explosive growth of the global green building industry as we all continue to create a world that will give people better, brighter, healthier spaces to live, work and play.”

The report was produced in partnership with PRP Environmental along with the following sponsors: Skanska, Grosvenor, and the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council/Estidama.

The World Green Building Council is a network of national green building councils from around the world.

“SKIN IN THE GAspringfield tests equipment installedME”

I heard once that the US Coast Guard requires the helicopter mechanic who repairs the chopper to go up with the pilot for the “test fly.”  Talk about SKIN IN THE GAME!!!  Those mechanics are undoubtedly checking and double checking every mechanical repair they made prior to take off.

With industrial construction, there are no test flights involved, and yet as a design/build fall prevention contractor, Springfield strives for the same level of attentiveness with all of our team members.  We take keeping people alive and safe very seriously.

Our fall prevention equipment is designed by Tim Korson, our own in-house Professional Engineer, with attention to the needs of the client and with studious attention to MI-OSHA and OSHA regulations. Routine inspections are performed periodically to ensure the systems are performing as designed.

Moving Roof Materials

It’s been 3 years since OSHA has implemented a revision for crane operators (Subpart CC). This revision requires operators of crane equipment to be certified, qualified, or licensed.

If an audited employer program is used it can be very costly for the owner, however, the employee could not use the qualification at another place of employment.

Other alternatives are out there but need to be OSHA approved. A government entity can be used for training, testing, and licensing. These qualifications would be transferable to another company for the employee.

Subpart CC excludes boom trucks with articulating or knuckle booms but not with straight booms.

Remember there are also certain requirements when to have a qualified signal person or rigger on the job site based on various circumstances. OSHA has specifics on certification and training for forklifts along with many other loading and maintenance procedures in the workplace.

Vendor Warranties

The #2 irritant of a facility manager is Vendor Warranties!! Calling the vendor when you have a warranty claim can be verying irritating and time consuming for facility managers. Especially when the vendors don’t want to live up to their warranties and make them difficult to understand what’s covered and what’s not. Make sure you when you are getting a quote for new construction, material, equipment, etc, ask for a copy of the warranty and make sure that their provisions are included in the quote that you will both be signing.

Happily, there are vendors out there who represent products with outstanding warranties. The Duro-Last warranty offered by Springfield Commercial Roofing is one of those vendors and make it very painless to process a claim. Check out all of the warranties they offer: Duro-Last warranty list.

Don’t hesitate to give us a call at 231-263-5300 if you have any questions on roof warranties.

Springfield ladder anchor safety

Ladder Safety

ladderBE SAFE!  BE SAFE! This is the message that is constantly being given by our management at Springfield, Inc.! We are all sincerely concerned with everyone’s safety; of our employees AND the employees of our clients. We have always installed fall protection on the roofs that we are fortunate enough to work on, in the past, only temporary fall protection but now Springfield SmartAnchor™ is available to install permanently if the client chooses. This fall protection system not only protects our employees but anyone that has to access the roof.

We also want to stress that before you can use the fall protection that we put ON the roof, you have to safely GET on the roof. A portable extension ladder is used a large precentage of the time to get on a roof and used multiply times daily which can become to feel to comfortable to the user. The National Safety Council (NSC) recently did a study and found that there are approximately 300 ladder-related deaths and more than 130,000 non-fatal accidents every year. Most of those are from the ladder not being secured; therefore, becoming dislodged, kicking out, or sliding sideways.

If you are contractor, especially a roofing contractor, the best insurance for your company is to implement a ladder safety program for your employees!

Stay tuned for exciting news from Springfield, Inc. that will assist your company with your ladder safety! Best Regards!
