THE CHALLENGE
The Stanwood Eagles, a prominent community organization in Stanwood, MI, faced a common issue with their building’s exposed fastener metal roof. Over time, the roof had developed problems such as deteriorating fasteners, fasteners backing out, and the presence of rust holes. This deterioration was allowing water to enter the building, posing a significant threat to the structural integrity and contents within the facility.
SPRINGFIELD'S CUSTOM SOLUTION
To address the critical roofing issues, Springfield’s roofing experts developed a comprehensive solution that not only tackled the existing problems but also provided long-term protection against similar challenges. Understanding the urgency of the situation, temporary repairs were executed to mitigate the immediate risk. The interim measures helped prevent further water intrusion, and damage while the comprehensive re-roofing project was being scheduled. Once the project began, Springfield’s team installed a specialized metal building retrofit system. An essential component of the solution involved the installation of a custom Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) flute filler. This filler was strategically placed to fill the space between the ribs of the metal roof panels and to provide additional insulation benefits. A layer of 1 ½” polyisocyanurate insulation board was laid, and a robust 50 mil dark gray Duro-Last membrane was installed over the insulated roofing structure. To complete the system, a new vinyl-coated drip edge was added to create a water-tight seal from edge to edge.
the results
With the combination of the metal building retrofit system, EPS flute filler, insulation board, and Duro-Last membrane, the Stanwood Eagles building is now protected from any further water intrusion, safeguarding it against any damage caused by leaks. The addition of the insulation improved the building’s energy efficiency by minimizing heat transfer, resulting in a more comfortable interior for occupants, and reducing the need for excessive heating or cooling. The new roofing system not only resolved functional issues but also provided an aesthetically pleasing appearance with the addition of the vinyl-coated drip edge. THE CHALLENGE
AKWEL AUTOMOTIVE is an engine parts manufacturer in Cadillac, MI. Their very large facility with numerous different types of roofing systems had leaking roofs that were out of warranty. The repair service they were getting wasn’t effective because the multiple roof systems made the tie-in very difficult to maintain. They had ice problems in certain areas of their building. There were areas where a leak could devastate their production and compromise the safety of their workers. Due to the extreme temps associated with their process, they had problems with severe leaking around their hot exhaust stacks. Coordinating work with a front-end remodel, they required a Class 1 and Class A rated system to ensure the safety of their employees and the facility. We recognized out-of-date equipment that needed to be removed from the rooftop with a crane.
SPRINGFIELD'S CUSTOM SOLUTION
We started with a complete evaluation of the facility (251,000 sq. feet) and began working out a plan with their facility engineer on whether to complete the project in phases or to go ahead with a complete renovation. We decided on a complete renovation and worked with their company on a daily basis on how to work around their facility without causing any stoppage in production.
Our solution was to remove the current roofing system and decking before adding new decking, insulation, and the highest quality PVC membrane. We worked with employees to put tarps over equipment while we replaced decking. We sealed off certain areas below to monitor the safety of AKWEL employees. We designed a stack flashing that worked around their hot exhaust pipes. We provided new pipe stands for conduits and gas lines.
The project required coordination with plumbers to install additional rooftop drains and electricians to move lines so that production was not interrupted.

THE CHALLENGE
THE SHORT'S BREWING COMPANY Bellaire production facility had an exposed fastener metal roof that had little insulation and experienced lots of ice buildup. The way the building was designed, there was no way to get large production equipment in or out without tearing apart one end of the building. Inside the facility, workers struggled with dim lighting and a dripping ceiling from condensation.
SPRINGFIELD'S CUSTOM SOLUTION
We started with a complete evaluation of the facility and their specific needs. From there, we designed a solution that required us to build an 18′ x 18′ hatch on the roof to allow large equipment to be easily moved in and out of the production facility. This hatch was incorporated into our Springfield Retrofit System.
To help with the lighting issues, we laid out and installed 27 Apollo® Solar Light Pipes in the roof for daylighting, which made for a much happier and healthier brew staff. Next, we designed a system to cover the roof with insulation that was made to fit the profile of the metal roof. Additional insulation board was added to eliminate condensation inside. We covered the metal roof with a custom-fit PVC membrane (Duro-Last) and installed a lifeline fall-prevention system to allow workers to safely access and perform work on the roof.
the results
The hatch was successful in the renovation of their brewery; in which they needed a way to easily replace tanks and other large equipment. The fall-protection system allows brew staff an easy and safe way to access the hatch in all weather conditions. The Light Pipes were a big hit throughout the entire processing area and their condensation issues are completely gone.

THE CHALLENGE
ALFIE LOGO GEAR, based in Traverse City, faced a challenge with their crimped seam metal roof system. During the harsh northern Michigan winter months, leaks were occurring near the roof edge due to ice dams caused by heat loss in the building. This resulted in water flowing into roof panel seams and fastener holes, causing damage to the roofing system.
SPRINGFIELD'S CUSTOM SOLUTION
Upon inspection and diagnosing Alfie Logo Gear’s specific needs, Springfield determined that a METAL BUILDING RETROFIT SYSTEM was the best solution for the building. This system is designed to provide insulation and membrane, reducing sound and preventing water from entering the building. Unlike the exposed metal of the previous system, the metal building retrofit system proved a more efficient and effective solution.
the results
After the completion of the retrofit system, Alfie Logo Gear President and CEO Bonnie Alfonso reported that the leaks and ice went away immediately. Alfie Logo Gear also reported seeing a significant energy savings from the new system. Additionally, employees reported that the new system had provided a greater sound barrier, making it much quieter during rainfall.
